Education:

2004 – 2007: PhD in Biomedical and Computer Engineering, University Magna Græcia of Catanzaro (Italy) - Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine. Thesis Discussion: “Study and design of an innovative system for measuring and correcting the wave aberration of the human eye”.

1999 – 2003: Specialization in Ophthalmology (50/50 with honours), Catholic University of Rome (Italy) - Department of Ophthalmology. Thesis Discussion: "First corneal surface optical aberrations and their correction”.

1993 – 1999: Degree in Medicine and Surgery (110/110 with honours), University "La Sapienza" of Rome (Italy). Thesis Discussion: "Application of an innovative visual biofeedback method in patients suffering from inherited retinal dystrophies".

Surgical Training:

2010 October: DALK-DMEK wet-lab course at NIIOS (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) under the supervision of Prof. Gerrit Melles.

2009 April & 2008 May: Visiting Surgeon at the Devers Eye Institute - Corneal Services (Portland, Oregon, USA), under the supervision of Prof. Mark A. Terry.

Dr. M. Lombardo is expert at corneal pathologies, corneal laser sugery, phacoemulsification procedure, medical retina and pediatric ophthalmology. He has performed more than 1500 surgical procedures, mostly on the anterior segment of the eye.

- Corneal Biomechanics.
- Nano-mechanics and Nano-resolved imaging of the corneal tissue.
- Byophisics of laser-tissue interaction.
- Wound healing of the corneal tissue.
- Human Optics and Quality of Vision (analysis of new visual metrics).
- Optical aberrations and visual performance.
- Biocompatibility of intraocular lenses.
- Innovation Technology in Ophthalmology: non conventional wavefront sensing and Adaptive Optics.

Dr. Lombardo is Researcher at the IRCCS Fondazione G.B. Bietti of Rome since January 2010.
Dr. Lombardo is responsible for various assorted. clinical and experimental, research projects related to the analysis of corneal biomechanics and optical quality of the cornea.
